FaceTimeOn the southern edge of Hudson Bay there is a remote place where male polar bears tend to congregate. They are very leery of each other for territorial reasons. This large male walked up to the fence where we were staying and I wanted to capture the sweetness and fierceness they exude.
Mom and Cub Near The North Pole
Mom and Cub Near The North PoleThere is nothing quite like being out in the middle of the pack ice a few hundred miles south of the north pole. to see polar bears in their habitat and what they go through to find food, earns them a high level of respect. Sadly, the ice fields are getting smaller and smaller. The reality of losing polar bears altogether is a real threat.
Bob Being Bob
Bob Being BobNear Churchill, Canada on the Hudson Bay, there is a lodge where you can photograph polar bears at eye level. Most people see the bears by using big “tundra buggies” but we got to walk with them. This bear named Bob, loved to hang around this lodge. He is a very large bear so he is known for his playful antics to try and reduce the other bears’ fear of him.I was giggling behind my camera as he rolled around on the ground like a toddler. Polar bears can be very disarming with how cute they are but never forget how quickly they would eat you if they wanted to.

Any Seals Home?Looking for food under the ice. The polar bears will jump up and down on the ice to try and scare a seal out so they can catch it.

Getting A Better LookThere is nothing as delightful as a big bear standing on it’s hind legs to get a better look!

Sorry Not SorryOne of the things I love about the polar bears is they act like they are doing something else and not really eyeing you. But if you look more closely you can see that he is considering how to get a-hold of me for dinner. I shot this image through holes in a fence that protected me from him.

Grizzly Cubs Wait For Mom
Grizzly Cubs Wait For MomIn Lake Clark, Alaska, we had the privilege of photographing grizzly bear at eye level. This pair of cubs watch as their mom stands in the stream looking to catch salmon. It was surprising to me how comfortable they felt coming near us and waiting patiently for mom to bring them some food.
